Several years ago, a bizarre mystery struck Greater Manchester, England, near the town of Wigan, where a young man’s body was discovered under strange circumstances.
Even after four years, the causes behind this unusual death are still up in the air… quite literally.
It began while an area resident was walking his dog by a large array of electrical pylons near the Westwood Power Station when, glancing up, he noticed something odd hanging from one of the structures. It was the lifeless body of a young man, who has yet to have been identified.
The individual, along with what were described as “casual” clothing, was found with only a handful of other items that included £85, a packet of Amber Leaf tobacco with a number of roll-up cigarettes inside, and a one-way bus ticket for the 600 service from Leigh to Wigan. The ticket was dated for the previous day.
The man’s body was hanging roughly ten feet above the ground, and at present there are still no leads as to who he might have been. The man is believed to have been of possible Middle Eastern heritage, having an olive complexion, and authorities say there is no reason to suspect foul play in the death.
In 2015, a pensioner later identified as David Lytton of London was found dead on Saddleworth Moor, also in Greater Manchester. Authorities now believe he brought a specific variety of rat poison, available only in Pakistan, with him to the moor, where he used it to claim his life. Many questions still remain about Lytton’s death, including what precisely motivated him to end his own life on a rainy night atop a moor.
The mysterious death of the “pylon man” bears at least some similarity to that of Todd Sees, an American man who had lived at Montour Ridge, West Chillisquaque Township, Pennsylvania. Sees had been an avid deer hunter, and had driven his four wheeler up a power line clearing near his home early on the morning of August 2, 2002 to search for sign prior to opening of deer season. His wife became concerned when Sees hadn’t returned home by noon, as he had told her prior to leaving. Within a few hours, a search began, and at the end of the second day of the search, Sees’ body was found suspended above the ground in a thickly overgrown area. Most of his clothing, save his underwear, were missing when his body was found, and some reports suggested Sees’ remains had an “emaciated” appearance.
The frustrating thing about the Todd Sees case is that so little credible data exists online which supports the case. According to Peter Davenport of the National UFO Reporting Center, calls to the township confirmed that the death had occurred, and in accordance with the general circumstances outlined above. However, separate reports that the FBI investigators subsequently claimed his body and withheld it from family members are apparently untrue. The exact time and cause of death remain unclear.
As for Greater Manchester’s mysterious “Pylon Man”, perhaps even less is known. What brought him to the pylons, and how had his lifeless body ended up being suspended 10 feet above ground, dangling from one of the structures?
At present, Manchester police are investigating a total of 195 unsolved murders, according to an FOIA request filed by the Manchester Evening News. You can read more about the publications investigations into these unsolved deaths here.
