Residents living along the Valira River in Spain were aghast when the water inexplicably turned a vivid green color.
Inspiring a slew of St. Patrick’s Day jokes, the river’s remarkable hue was revealed to have been intentionally created, but not in honor of the upcoming holiday.
Officials say that a special dye had been added to the river by investigators hoping to determine the source of a contamination than had caused thousands of people to get sick last year.
So, ironically, the green water is actually safer for people to drink than the water was last year, which may be hard for people living in the area to believe but is apparently true.
Nonetheless, they likely won’t be blamed for sticking with bottled water until the colorful river returns to normal.
