I live in a cabin in the woods, in a pretty rural area. this incident took place over a heavily wooded ridge. went outside for a smoke around 2040 hrs., and i saw a very bright light approaching from due west like an aircraft. however, it looked like a "spiked star" to the naked eye (see my terrible sketch). after approaching my position in a linear fashion, it stopped….As if it were hovering. it was completely silent at all times. maybe 1000-3000 feet in altitude. not sure of distance, perhaps 0.25-0.50 miles from my position. to the naked eye, it appeared to be four lights in a cross configuration, with "spikes" protruding outwards like a christmas star, if you will. a couple of times, it looked like a german cross (balkenkreuze). the four white lights blinked in a random manner. after approaching, it hovered for approximately 20 minutes. during this time, it seemed to "scan" the area, from left to right, on a central axis…Like an electric eye, if you will.. i waved, lit my phones flashlight to attract their attention, etc…. to my eye, it seemed to be surveying my area. i don't know……. but after 20-25 minutes, it vaguely faded back into the cloud cover, in the same straightline path it arrived along.. forgive my terrible iphone6 photos…
